Dear friends,

Every year about this time, I write to request your support for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. Emma and I will be walking in the CBTF Family and Friends Walk again this year, and your support would mean the world to us. I usually write about the many things that CBTF has done for Emma. This year is a little different. I want to tell you about the connections the Foundation supports among brain tumor survivors and their families. Melissa Bergman, a dear member of the CBTF community, passed away this summer after a 36-year battle with brain cancer. Melissa and her parents, Marianne and Alan, made the most of every day. With determination and optimism, they worked to help Melissa reach as many of her dreams as possible. She went to college, drove a car, worked at Disney World, and lived on her own for several years. Emma and Melissa met through CBTF events and immediately formed a lasting friendship that included phone calls and trips to Connecticut and Florida. True friendship can be hard to find for brain tumor survivors, but CBTF made it possible for these two remarkable women to meet. Through their connection, Emma began to see new possibilities, and through Melissa’s example, Emma began to dream her own dreams.

Please support us as we remember Melissa and honor her tenacity. And her smile, we will always remember her smile. We rarely saw her without it.

With gratitude,

Charlene and Emma
