A few times now, I've paid the registration fee, gone to the expo, ran the race, and got the participation medal. While it feels good in the moment, I'm always left wondering if I could have given more. Could I have trained harder? Could I have slept more? Could I have made the miles count for something bigger than myself?
As a medical student, I often feel helpless in supporting patients and their families through difficult diagnoses. I can hold their hands, listen, and cry with them. But I can't pay their medical bills. I can't create a new treatment for them. I can't promise them the future they feel slipping away.
This year, I will be running the NYC Marathon on behalf of The Children's Brain Tumor Foundation in honor of every patient I met who needed something I could not give. I hope that together, we can make a small dent in the massive need for education, research, and support of patients and their families fighting with pediatric brain cancer.
