When we were in 5th grade, my good friend Joshua was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer: DIPG. We had been in the same class for several years, always assigned lockers or cubbies next to each other because of our close last names (number 12 and 13). I remember him as the most considerate, selfless, and strong person I had ever known, and knowing him profoundly changed my life.
While most 5th graders worry about the looming challenges of middle school, our class faced the harsh reality of cancer. A few friends and I spent time in the front office crafting golden ribbons to hand out for an upcoming defeat DIPG event. I recently found my ribbon in a shoebox of memories, which brought back vivid recollections of the beautiful tree planted in Joshua's honor outside our elementary school. I soon after visited his tree with the ribbon in hand.
One of my favorite memories of Joshua was when he invited me to join him and his family at the Sugar Factory for an event. That afternoon was so much fun—we dressed in costumes (he as a Packers fan and me as Mario) and shared a goblet drink with lots of candy inside! I was so excited about the experience that I accidentally left my Mario gloves at the restaurant!
When I decided to run a marathon, I knew I wanted to do it for families like Joshua’s, who face the unimaginable challenges of a childhood cancer diagnosis. In honor of my participation in this year’s Chicago Marathon, I kindly ask you to consider making a donation to the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF).
For over a decade, CBTF has been a national leader in providing programs for families affected by brain tumors. As the founders of the Children’s Brain Tumor Network, CBTF believes that collaboration is crucial in the pursuit of a cure and in addressing the often devastating long-term effects of brain tumor treatment.
